- Frequently
asked questions about the club
|
- How active is
the Club?
-
- Meets are held
over a weekend more or less every
4 weeks throughout the year
including the May Day and Spring
Bank holiday weekends. We also
have a monthly mid-week walk
(referred to within the Club as a
"Rendezvous Walk")
in the Peak District.
-
- Activities are
diverse with some groups doing
hard mountain walking, others
more leisurely low-level rambles.
There is a small number of very
active climbers.
-
- Attendance at
a typical meet would be around 20
members and guests, with perhaps
6-10 on the monthly mid-week
walk.
-
- Where do you
meet?
-
- Meets are held
in all the popular walking
/climbing areas including the
Peak District, Snowdonia, Lake
District, Yorkshire Dales, North
Yorkshire Moors, Northern
Pennines, Northumberland,
Scottish Borders and the Scottish
Mountains.
- Most of the
meets are on campsites, although
many members have now abandoned
tents and retreated to the
relative comforts of campervans
or caravans. Some also use bed
and breakfast accommodation.
-
- In the
winter we use mountaineering club
huts or hostel accommodation.
- If you
dont want to stay overnight
and prefer to only come out for
the day you will still be welcome
on the Meet.
-
- A mid-week
Rendezvous Walk of up to 10 miles
is held in the Peak District once
a month.
-
- How are Meets
and Activities organised?
-
- The Meets
programme for the following year
is determined at the AGM each
December and Meets are organised
by each Full Member in turn. As
well as campsite details and
directions, a suitable local pub
is a prime requirement for
Saturday night.
-
- Walks are not
formally organised with an
appointed leader. Rather someone
usually fancies doing a
particular route and others join
in depending on the weather,
distance etc. Others may come
part way and return by a shorter
route or perhaps vary the
original route to suit
themselves. Youll probably
find huddles of people around
maps at about 9.30 am on the
Saturday morning trying to reach
a consensus! A typical walk on
the Saturday might be 10-12 miles
with a shorter walk on the
Sunday.
-
- It is up to
the individual to decide what
he/she wishes to participate in
although it is hoped that
interest in achieving a degree of
competence in map and compass
work or climbing techniques will
be shown.
-
- Do you have to
live in or near Barnsley to join?
-
- No. The
membership is quite widely spread
on both sides of the Pennines,
mainly through South and West
Yorkshire and Greater Manchester,
with a nucleus of members in
Barnsley.
-
- The Club has
approximately 65 members of whom
20 are Full Members and 45
Associate Members.
-
- Election to
Full membership is by the AGM and
a commitment to the Club must be
shown.
-
- What is the
Age Profile of the Club?
-
- As the Club
was founded in 1946 we have a
wide age range amongst members.
The bulk of active members are in
the 30s to 60s range.
-
- How do I
receive details of Meets and
Rendezvous Walks?
-
- A monthly
circular is posted or emailed to
all members with details of the
campsite and directions to find
it, site fees and facilities plus
the meeting place for the
Rendezvous Walk.
-
- If you are
interested in coming on our meets
the first three circulars will be
posted to you free of charge.
After that we would ask for a
donation to cover costs of £5
for 12 months. Alternatively
circulars can be emailed to you.
-
- How do I join?
-
- Guests,
friends and potential new members
are always welcome to attend the
Meets or Rendezvous Walks. It is
usual to attend around 3 meets or
so to get to know people (and
vice versa) before joining as an
Associate Member.
- An application
form is obtainable from the
Honorary Secretary.
-
- What does it
cost to join?
-
- The annual
subscription in 2008 is £17 for
all members aged 18 and over.
-
- How do I
get to a Meet?
-
- Transport to
Meets is in the hands of the
individual. In the winter months
when in huts we often share
vehicles (and petrol costs). Most
of the time car sharing is
impractical as people bring their
spouse/ partner/family or fill
their vehicle with gear!
-
- Is the Club
Affiliated to the British
Mountaineering Council or other
organizations?
-
- The Club is
affiliated to the British
Mountaineering Council (BMC) and
each member is designated a Club
Member by the BMC and receives
their publication
Summit. We are also
affiliated to the Ramblers
Association, the Friends of the
Peak District, the Peak and
Northern Footpath Society, the
Yorkshire Dales Society, the
Friends of the Lake District and
the Snowdonia National Park
Society.
